Phantom Pains and Belly Shirts!

I just ordered 2 new pairs of shoes and a shirt using my Brooks discount. That discount can be deadly but I've managed to not go too crazy. I've been really happy with the Brooks Adrenaline so I'm sticking with them. I have to order a size 9.5 wide, though, which makes me feel like a giant...But if they feel good, that's all that matters.

I've been meaning to post a picture of the Brooks racing uniform but I haven't had the balls to put it on yet and model it for a picture. Take a look at this shirt. This thing is so small, it's ridiculous. I usually wear a size small or medium and I ended up ordering an XL in this one and it's still a tight fit! The Rock n Roll Philly half is a Brooks sponsored event so I'll be sporting the belly shirt in just a few weeks. Hot.

I have my first 18 miler since June tomorrow and I'm actually a little nervous. Each long run rattles me a bit because I'm scared I'm doing too much and risking injury. When am I going to get past this fear of getting hurt again? I swear I'm having phantom pains in the Achilles, too. I am not in pain, definitely not in pain, but I have weird sensations in the area and think about it all...the...time. Has anyone else ever gone through this post injury? I'm beginning to think I'm even crazier than I thought.

I hope everyone has a great Labor Day weekend. We don't have much planned except for the first Michigan football game of the year. GO BLUE!!

After my stress fracture I was constantly having phantom pains. I was constantly worried about reinjuring. Only now that I am a year out from that do I feel more confident. The good news is, I think it makes you take good care of yourself and not push too much. Good luck w/the long run!!

Phantom pains in my opinion are A) because we worry so much about reinjury B) inserted by the doctor so we visit the office a few more times.
I'm a little surprised you're hitting 18 miles so soon, but if you want the PR, you gotta put in the work. Have fun!

Pain memory! Oh yes, I had it with my stress fracture and my ITB injury. I read somewhere that when you have severe or prolonged pain, your body holds onto the "memory" of pain and you have to reteach it that it is not in pain any longer. Massage and just continuous contact with the affected area seemed to help a lot.

that shirt looks awesome. i'm with you tho, i take an XL in those tiny tops too! i usually wear a small or xs. my tri top is horrifying, spandex top and bottom is not a good look for me! i wear brooks trail shoes and i wear a size 9, my asics are 8.5 (really i take an 8 but i wear them a half size bigger) and my dress shoes are 7-7.5. weird. have a nice weekend

For me it was almost like my AT had a nervous tick -- like it wanted to strain but just wouldn't do it. I started to ice it after each my runs, regardless of the distance. I also stretched it until I thought it would snap and it went away.

Not going to lie, I've seen photos of other people in the Brooks shirt, and while they look great in it, it terrifies me.
Good luck on 18!

YEA! I wear a small too, and when they sent me that fluorescent yellow spandex thing (and I attempted to put it on), I laughed until I cried. I then turned it in for an XL and still want to cry a little! How do they expect that to look good on anyone?! I LOVE brooks, that the racing singlet is something else... :)

That shirt is short! Ekk! I do love the color.

I'm sure the phantom pains are just your body saying remember to listen to me.

Enjoy your 18 miles and the holiday weekend.

oye I am not a fan of the short shirts, i just yank on them the whole time.

yes I always think something might hurt, so I just keep paying too much attention to it

My Achilles is supposed to be healed now but guess what, the pain keeps coming back and I have no way of knowing it it is me getting totally paranoid or if it is real.

Two years ago, after an 18 mile training run I developed peroneal tendonitis! It's been a small problem ever since. I ran 18 today as well! Feel pretty good, hope you do too!

Sometimes I am unsure if they are phantom or real, but before a race I always seem to have pains!

See you soon!!

I can not do short shirts. good luck with that! I broke my left foot in high school then had to have surgery to remove the bone that broke in college. To this day I will still get random phantom pains where the bone was. There is nothing there! It shouldn't hurt but it does once and again. You will eventually get more confident with the whole post injury running though. I promise!

I'm a size 10 girl so your 9.5s are nuthin'!

Every single time I've come back from an injury I've had to battle my mind. It's such a drag. But, you know what you can and cannot handle and you've proven to be good at listening to your body so I'm sure you'll be OK. Hope the 18-miler went well!

Most people do like a larger shirt. But I'm a fan of the tiny t. I don't like the extra fabric swinging around. It aggravates me.

Hey Denise! Good luck at Philly and congrats on the ID.

We have a Brooks shimmel as our team shirt and it is soooo small, we all ordered a size larger, + it could stand to be a little longer too!

Don't worry, you'll look great and you'll get that PR! Good luck, I'll be in Philly too, maybe I'll see you there! ;)
